So, What's Our Secret?

The truth is, the more success you have on a platform like Kickstarter, the easier it is to repeat that success. And while every project is unique in some ways, having a replicable system that you can apply to any project is the key to repeat success on the platform.

Unfortunately, most creators on Kickstarter don't have a plan for success... and the stats prove it.

The overall success rate for projects on Kickstarter is just 35%, and it's dropping.

However, since ComixLaunch went live in mid-2015, the comics category has been a bit of an outlier on Kickstarter, with the success rate raising 3.5% in that time, to around 53.5% today.

(I like to think the show has played a small part in that.)

But that still means 47 out of every 100 comic projects fail to fund.

But why? Why do almost half of all comic projects fail to fund on Kickstarter? What mistakes are those creators making?

The 3 Biggest Mistakes Creators Make on Kickstarter

Big Mistake #1: They Worry About the Funding, Instead of the Crowd.

The reason most Kickstarter projects fail is that the creators behind them haven't properly readied an audience before they launch.

Too many creators mistakenly believe it's Kickstarter who will provides the backers.

It's not.

Kickstarter's job is to provide the venue.

But it's up to you to bring the guests.

There's a reason it's called called crowdfunding... because the crowd always must come before the funding.

That's the bad news.

The good news is, for most projects, the crowd doesn't need to be all that big to have success on Kickstarter.

And the great news is that there are proven, step-by-step methods that any creator can put into practice to build a crowd of raving fans and go from zero to funded on Kickstarter.

Big Mistake #2: They Think It's the Campaign That Determines Success or Failure.

While executing a phenomenal Kickstarter campaign is certainly important, the 30-day stretch when your project is live is only a small part of Kickstarter success.

Yet far too many creators only pay attention to what goes on during the campaign.

This leads creators down the wrong path, where they think by simply copying what other creators do during their campaigns, they'll be able to have the same success.

What they don't realize is that the campaign itself is just the tip of the iceberg...

In reality, it's what happens in the weeks and months before the campaign launches that make the biggest impact on funding.

And it's the months after the campaign is over, when the campaigns are fulfilled on time (or not) and careers are taken to the next level (or not) that are the true measures of Kickstarter success or failure.

Big Mistake #3: They Think They Have to Be Superman.

Many of us are self-taught and DIY to the core.

And because of this, often we make things happen and get things done. (That's good!)

But when "Superman Syndrome" sets in, and we errononeously believe that we need to tackle every aspect of our campaigns ourselves -- even the things we don't know how to do, aren't good at, or hate doing -- we ultimately put a cap on our success.

Successful Kickstarter creators are acutely aware of their personal strengths and weaknesses.

They spend most of their time on the areas where they personally add the most value or are particularly strong, and they recruit or outsource to others things they hate doing, can't do, are bad at doing, or simply shouldn't be doing.

And the funny thing is, even Superman knows he can't always save the world on his own. (That's why he's in the Justice League.)

To find lasting success in crowdfunding and in your creative career, you too will need to find your Justice League.

No one builds a career alone.
